Neighborhood Block Party & Movie Chest Programs Kick Off in September

Opportunities for neighbors to interact and get to know one another are becoming few and far between in today's on-the-go atmosphere.  The city's new Neighborhood Block Party trailer and Neighborhood Movie Chest allows neighborhoods throughout San Marcos to host fun, easy events to bring neighbors together.

The Block Party trailer and Neighborhood Movie Chest are available to reserve year-round, free of charge (as available), for residents of incorporated San Marcos only (sorry, no ETJ use at this time). The Neighborhood Block Party Trailer program will launch on September 20th, and the Neighborhood Movie Chest will be available beginning September 9th, so find out more and make your reservation today by visiting the programs' web page.

Other items available to lend through our Home Equipment Lending Program (HELP) include: fence staining, tree trimming, power washing, and curb addressing kits.  Find out more here. Email Neighborhood Enhancement for more information about either of these programs.

Mission Able

Mission Able Seeks Volunteers

Mission Able is a program through First Baptist Church of San Marcos that has worked with Neighborhood Enhancement staff on several minor home repair and rehabilitation projects in 2021 to help San Marcos residents in need. Mission Able is always looking for more volunteers as the service requests are frequent. For more information on Mission Able, or to access their volunteer assessment form, please visit their website. Registered volunteers are connected with an alert system that lets you know of upcoming projects and sign ups. Come serve our neighbors with us!

WIC CPS Outreach

WIC Reaches Out to Child Protective Services

Suzanne Myles, Women Infants & Children (WIC) Health & Nutrition Supervisor, made a visit to our partners at Hays County Children’s Protective Services (CPS) in July. Her goal was to update them on the current methods WIC employs to ensure a smooth WIC enrollment process for children being placed in foster care.  Within the last two years, Texas WIC’s transition to a “paperless” system and functioning in disaster mode for the pandemic have created multiple changes to the way children receive WIC benefits, streamlining the enrollment steps for both CPS and the foster families.  Our partners at CPS were appreciative of the opportunity to visit with Suzanne and learn about the updated processes.

WIC Proclamation at City Council Meeting

WIC Celebrates National Breastfeeding Month

WIC celebrated National Breastfeeding Month in August. WIC staff kicked off the festivities with a proud proclamation at City Hall boasting this year’s theme, “Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility.” Breastfeeding is often seen as only the mother’s responsibility. However, for her to be successful, fathers, partners, employers, hospitals and health care professionals all have a role to play. The dedicated WIC staff, including Clerks, Nutritionists, Peer Counselors, Registered Dietitians (RD), and International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC), have a vital role to the shared responsibility of breastfeeding. We are here to support families every step of the way, from a support hotline, to peer counseling and lactation counseling.

Pictured above are the Honorable Jane Hughson, Mayor, City of San Marcos, Analia Cano IBCLC, WIC Program Supervisor, DerryAnn Krupinsky, Assistant Director of Neighborhood Enhancement and WIC Director, Stacie Olivarri LDRD, Nutrition and Breastfeeding Coordinator, and Marisela Leija, Breastfeeding Peer Counselor/Clerk.
