Retirement Planning Seminar

Who: “How do I even begin planning for retirement?” Discuss the concepts, specific tools, and dollar amounts of retirement planning, and how it fits within your overall financial plan. This educational workshop is presented by Terry Lee, a financial adviser with Raymond James.

Library Open House

When: October 2, 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. & October 3, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library

Who: The San Marcos community is invited to review architectural plans for the San Marcos Public Library expansion and remodel project. Funding for this project was approved by city voters in 2017. The come-and-go event will feature large drawings to include: floor plans, exterior design, site design, and parking, as well as the history of the public library in San Marcos.

Groundbreaking Ceremony 

When: October 3, 10:00 a.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library

Who: Local citizens are invited to celebrate a major milestone in the history of the City of San Marcos when ground is broken to celebrate the start of the public library expansion and remodel project. The groundbreaking will include presentations by library and civic officials, and ceremonial turning of the shovel. The library expansion will add 28,000 square feet to the existing 27,000 square feet. Once completed in early 2021, the public library will offer modernized spaces including a teen room, makerspace, technology hub, and an enclosed children’s area. The library will also include study rooms, conference rooms, and a large meeting room that will seat up to 240 people. Voters approved the 14.75 million project in 2017.

Mano Amiga Presents: The Cost of Extreme Cannabis Enforcement in San Marcos When: October 3, 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library

Who: Since 2013, possession of marijuana has been the number one cause of arrest in Hays County, while neighboring Texas counties decline prosecution or issue tickets. This panel will examine the human cost and financial implications of Hays County's marijuana policies. Panelists will discuss historic marijuana activism in San Marcos as well as ongoing efforts. Presented by local activist organization, Mano Amiga.

AARP Smart Driver Course

When: October 14, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Where: San Marcos Public Library

Who: The AARP Smart Driver course is designed for drivers age 50 and older as a refresher for driving skills and road knowledge. Instruction includes proper use of new technology in cars, techniques for handling turns, and state-specific rules of the road. This class does not count toward Defensive Driving requirements. Register through the library, but textbook fees will be paid to the instructor on the day of class. Cost for textbook is $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-members. Please bring cash or check (made out to AARP).

Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Where: San Marcos Public Library

Who: Indigenous playwright Roxanne Schroeder-Arce discusses the adaptation process of her and her mother’s children's play, Yana Wana's Legend of the Bluebonnet, during which they uncovered many culturally incorrect sources written by non-indigenous people. The adaptation process, which began as an effort to expand public awareness of their history and traditions, became a deeply meaningful journey of cultural reclamation. Dr. Mario Garza presents information on the upcoming Sacred Springs Powwow.

2:00 p.m. – OUR FRIEND JON: This documentary chronicles the making of an independent horror movie to honor the memory of the film maker’s dead friend.

Claiming Sunday: The Story of a Texas Slave Community

Who: On this 400th anniversary of the beginning of slavery, the library will host Dr. Elvin Holt to moderate a panel discussion with Jo Snider on her book Claiming Sunday: The Story of a Texas Slave Community, a historical book illustrating the details of slave life in an East Texas community from 1830 to 1865. Dr. Holt will also interview local artist Robert (Bob) Jones on his collaboration with Snider and the creation of artistic depictions of the people who were enslaved in this account.
