  8. Lifelong Learning: Resisting the Confederacy in Texas

    August 23, 2017, 10:30 AM - 11:45 AM @ San Marcos Public Library

Although Texans voted overwhelmingly for secession, there was a considerable number of Texans who did not share that opinion, not just Sam Houston. Unionism, dissent, and resistance, were not all the same thing, and these attitudes expressed themselves in a variety of ways among every Texas population then in existence, even among slaveholders and multi-generation Southerners. Anti-Confederate and anti-secession attitudes were held by whites, blacks, and Mexican and German Texans. This presentation provides an overview of these other sides of Civil War Texas and explains why we should not view the Civil War as having started in 1861 and ended in 1865. Presented by Dr. Jesús F. de la Teja. Lone Star Unionism Dissent, and Resistance: Other Sides of Civil War Texas, edited by Dr. De la Teja will be available for purchase for $20 (cash or check only).
