Voting Rights Act

Collaboration

In August 1965 the continued collaboration between Dr. King and President Johnson resulted in the Voting Rights Act.

Street Naming

Before the Voting Rights Act was signed in August, back in San Marcos in June of 1965, at the request of Alderman William C. Pool, the San Marcos City Council approved changing the name of Austin Street to Lyndon Baines Johnson Drive.

Twenty-two years later in 1987 after Ms. Johnnie Armstead presented a petition of 250 names, the San Marcos City Council approved changing the name of Porter-Comal Street to Martin Luther King Drive. Other local residents instrumental in petitioning for the name change were Josie Mack, Marguerite Cheatham Hill, and Leslie Hooker.
