SMTX Utilities regularly trims trees in a specific zone of San Marcos, in accordance with the City's Tree Trimming Policy, to maintain adequate clearance between electric lines and trees. Trimming tree limbs is essential in providing dependable electric service with few interruptions.
The City contracts with a vegetation management company to assist with the tree trimming program. All trimming is done in accordance with specifications provided by a Certified Arborist, industry standards for tree trimming, and Texas Forest Service oak wilt guidelines. Prior to trimming, door hangers are left at the residences in the area providing the name and phone number for the City's contractor along with the starting date for the work. Residents do not need to be home during the tree maintenance and the contractor will remove all trimming materials. View the Zone 4 map where crews will be working until 2028.
SMTX Utilities does not take tree trimming service requests. Residents are responsible for ensuring tree limbs remain clear of electrical lines, right of ways, and alleys or easements.
San Marcos residents who trim their trees are welcome to take part in the Brush Drop-Off & Mulch Pick Up program located at 750 River Road behind the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter. San Marcos residents are also invited to pick up free mulch or drop off brush, limbs, leaves, and grass clippings during the monthly event held the second Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents must provide a copy of a City of San Marcos utility bill and load and unload their materials.
