Canine Distemper

Emancipet Mobile Veterinary Clinic will be at the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter on Monday, April 19, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Distemper
We've seen an alarming number of dogs and puppies come into the shelter with distemper in the last two weeks; all picked up in Kyle by our Animal Protection Officers and community members. Our amazing staff are staying vigilant in keeping infected dogs isolated from the general population; so the virus doesn't spread.

Distemper is a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. Dogs and puppies can attract distemper through airborne exposure, such as sneezing and couching from an infected dog or wild animal. The virus can also be transmitted by shared food and water bowls and equipment. Infected dogs can shed the virus for months, and mother dogs can pass the virus through the placenta to their puppies.

There is no cure for distemper, and it's often fatal, so it's important now than ever to keep your pup up-to-date on all vaccinations, especially the distemper vaccination.

If your puppy or dog is not up to date with vaccines, please take the time to schedule an appointment with your veterinary care provider or use the low-cost veterinary services offered by Emancipet Central Texas.
