Animal Services Volunteer

Volunteers Are Part of Our Shelter Family!

The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter relies on volunteers to assist with many of the programs that the shelter participates in, and to assist with everyday duties at the shelter. If you feel you are able to meet the following requirements, please complete the volunteer application, and then call 512-805-2657 to register for an orientation in advance.

Minimum Requirements

  • Attend a 1 hour volunteer orientation prior to volunteering
  • Be 18 years of age or older to volunteer alone, or Minors must be at least 7 years of age and accompanied by parent or guardian at all times
  • Complete at least 6 hours of work per month (adults) OR complete at least 2 hours of work per month (parents with minor volunteers)
  • Pay $15 orientation fee per adult. Orientation fee must be paid by 5 pm the day before orientation.


Duties include cleaning and feeding animals, grooming and exercising animals, clerical work in the office and working on special projects, and adoption or fundraising events.

Volunteers are given thorough instructions on how to properly clean and feed our animals.

Basic animal care involves grooming and exercising. Cats and kittens need brushing and nail trimming. Dogs and puppies need bathing, brushing and nail trimming. All animals need daily exercise. We have cat toys and scratching posts available for the cats to play with. We have 2 large courtyards to walk our dogs.

Other duties include office and clerical work, greeting visitors, answering the phone, data entry, filing, animal photography, and other miscellaneous activities. Special projects and events include various programs in the schools and other organizations, annual events such as our Rabies Clinic, the Mutt-Strutt and a variety of events for Texas State University, San Marcos CISD and organizations around our community.
