**Adoptions, Fosters Needed Urgently at Animal Shelter**
The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter (SMRAS) is urgently requesting assistance from individuals, volunteers or organizations to foster, rescue or adopt shelter animals to increase space within the shelter and to prepare for any possible shelter closure due to the health concerns related to the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).
San Marcos Animal Services is dedicated to protecting the pets and people of the City of San Marcos. Our mission is to care for, protect and find quality homes for abandoned and neglected animals, aid in the reduction of pet overpopulation, and provide community education for the mutual benefit of animals and people.
The animal shelter is both the stray intake and rabies quarantine facility for the entirety of Hays County, and offer a full-service animal shelter, offering homeless dogs, cats, and other small animals for adoption and rescue.
This facility is coordinated and maintained 365 days per year. An Animal Protection Officer is 24 hours a day to assist our city’s residents, during regular hours of operation and providing a response to animal emergencies after hours. The Animal Services Division provides response calls for service involving stray animals, non-domestic or wild animals, deceased or injured animals, bite cases involving people and/or animals, as well as nuisance, cruelty, neglect and welfare investigations.
The Animal Shelter provides internship, volunteer and foster opportunities, adoption and outreach events, food assistance programs, and low-cost microchips and spay/neuter services.
In December 2018, San Marcos City Council directed staff to develop a plan to achieve a 90% Live Outcome Rate (LOR) at SMRAS. A committee was established early in 2019 and is on target to present the plan to council in June. To learn more about the implementation plan process, public input sessions, or to submit comments in writing, please email email@example.com.
