The San Marcos Police Department Evidence Unit is responsible for maintaining, storing and disposing of all property and evidence taken into custody by the San Marcos Police Department, the San Marcos Fire Marshall's Office and the San Marcos Park Rangers. Property taken as evidence must be carefully safeguarded to maintain chain of custody and insure its value in court.
The Unit is also responsible for the proper and timely disposal of property and evidence. This includes the return of property to its rightful owner or the destruction as prescribed by law. The Unit operates in accordance with Texas statutes and San Marcos Police Department policy.
It is strongly recommended that you call to make an appointment before coming to the Police Department should you wish to recover your property. Appropriate identification will be required and additional proof of ownership may be needed. Evidence personnel are the only department members authorized to release property to you and can only do so in conformance with applicable local, state and federal laws along with departmental policy.
